PRESS RELEASE: Launch of the Mind Sports Federation of Singapore (MSFS)

Singapore Launches Mind Sports Federation to Develop the Nation’s Next Generation of Strategic Thinkers and Intellectual Champions

Singapore, 15 August 2026 – Singapore today marks a significant milestone in the development of intellectual sports with the official launch of the Mind Sports Federation of Singapore (MSFS), the national umbrella federation dedicated to governing, developing and promoting mind sports across Singapore.

The establishment of MSFS reflects Singapore’s growing commitment to nurturing intellectual excellence through structured competition, athlete development, education and international collaboration. Bringing together diverse disciplines under one national platform, the Federation aims to create a vibrant ecosystem that supports participants from grassroots to elite international competition.

Mind sports have experienced unprecedented global growth over the past decade. From traditional games such as Chess, Xiangqi, Go and Bridge to emerging strategic disciplines including Memory Sports, Trading Card Games and competitive strategic board games, participation continues to expand worldwide. Industry research projects the global chess market alone to reach approximately USD 3.3 billion by 2030, driven by increasing participation, digital platforms, educational adoption and the rising popularity of mind sports internationally.

Singapore is well-positioned to be part of this growing movement.

The Mind Sports Federation of Singapore will serve as the national developmental platform that brings together:

  • Athletes
  • National associations
  • Coaches
  • Officials
  • Tournament organisers
  • Educational institutions
  • Community organisations
  • Industry and technology partners

By integrating governance, education, athlete pathways, competitions, research and innovation, MSFS seeks to strengthen Singapore’s position as a recognised leader within the international mind sports community.

Building Singapore’s Mind Sports Ecosystem

MSFS has been established with several key national objectives:

  • Develop and govern mind sports in Singapore
  • Promote intellectual, strategic and analytical competition
  • Support youth and athlete development
  • Establish national talent pathways
  • Strengthen international collaboration
  • Build a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem
  • Encourage innovation and digital transformation across mind sports

The Federation will work closely with schools, institutes of higher learning, community organisations, private sector partners and international federations to create more opportunities for participation, competition and excellence.

Supporting a Diverse Range of Mind Sports

MSFS will support the development of multiple recognised mind sports, including:

  • Chess
  • Chinese Chess (Xiangqi)
  • Go (Weiqi)
  • Contract Bridge
  • Poker (mind sport discipline)
  • Carrom
  • Shogi
  • Mahjong
  • Memory Sports
  • Rubik’s Cube (Speedcubing)
  • Strategic Board Games
  • International Draughts

The Federation also remains open to embracing new and emerging intellectual competitive disciplines as the global landscape evolves.

Riding the Global Growth of Mind Sports

Around the world, governments, sporting bodies and educational institutions increasingly recognise that mind sports contribute far beyond competition.

Participation helps develop:

  • Critical thinking
  • Strategic planning
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Memory and concentration
  • Creativity
  • Emotional resilience
  • Problem-solving
  • Sportsmanship
  • Cross-cultural engagement

Internationally, organisations such as the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) and the recently established Asian Mind Sports Federation are expanding opportunities for regional cooperation, athlete exchanges and international competitions.

Singapore’s launch of MSFS aligns with this growing international movement and positions the nation to play a larger leadership role within Asia.

Strengthening Singapore’s Talent Pipeline

Singapore has long produced accomplished competitors across chess, bridge, xiangqi, weiqi and other intellectual disciplines. However, many athletes and associations have traditionally developed independently.

MSFS provides an integrated national platform that enables greater collaboration, shared resources and coordinated athlete development.

The Federation will focus on:

  • National coaching frameworks
  • Youth talent identification
  • Athlete education
  • Competition pathways
  • Coach and official certification
  • International representation
  • Research and innovation
  • Community outreach

By connecting these efforts, MSFS aims to strengthen Singapore’s competitiveness on the regional and global stage while encouraging lifelong participation across all age groups.

Preparing Singapore for the Future

As artificial intelligence, digital technologies and data analytics reshape industries worldwide, strategic thinking and cognitive skills have become increasingly valuable.

Mind sports cultivate many of the competencies required in future economies, including:

  • Systems thinking
  • Pattern recognition
  • Risk analysis
  • Logical reasoning
  • Adaptability
  • Collaborative problem-solving

MSFS believes that developing intellectual athletes also contributes to developing future innovators, professionals and leaders.

“Mind sports are more than games—they cultivate strategic thinking, discipline, resilience and lifelong learning. The establishment of MSFS marks an important step towards building a unified ecosystem that nurtures talent, strengthens our sporting community and positions Singapore as a leading hub for mind sports in Asia.”

Mr. Vincent Ng Cheng Hye
President, Mind Sports Federation of Singapore
